BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS! Dolphins Repeat as Region 10 / Atlantic District Champions with 90-76 Win Versus Gaston, Punch Ticket to Nationals
The #2 seeded Brunswick Community College Dolphins Men's Basketball team (28–5) are once again NJCAA Region 10–Division I Atlantic District Champions, defeating #1 seeded Gaston College (28–4) 90–76 to punch their ticket to the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas. Leading at the half 39-29, the Dolphins expanded their lead to 21 points before being able to hold off a furious rally by Gaston in the closing minutes to determine the final score.
The Dolphins were dominant throughout the tournament, winning their three games by an average margin of 21 points on their way to the championship.
Under the leadership of Walter Shaw, who now sits at 524 career wins in his 26th season, Brunswick captured the Atlantic District title for the second consecutive year and the third time since 2021. The championship also marks Brunswick's fifth Region 10 Tournament title and fourth appearance at "Hutch," all coming under Coach Shaw's leadership.
With the victory, the Dolphins also made history, becoming the first Region 10 program since 2017 to win back-to-back championships, securing the conference's automatic berth into the national tournament.
This year's Dolphins team has embraced the mantra "Strength in Numbers." Brunswick averages 94 points per game and features an incredibly balanced scoring attack with 10 players averaging between 5 and 13 points per game. The team has also had nine different leading scorers throughout the season, showcasing their depth and unselfish style of play.
The Dolphins' success has also been reflected in postseason honors. Darius Kane earned First Team All-Region 10 honors, while Alius "Junior" Bowser and Linwood Rowe were named Second Team All-Region 10 selections.
Both Bowser and Kane have committed to North Carolina Central University, continuing their careers at the NCAA Division I level. Meanwhile, Rowe, currently the team's leading scorer, has been recognized as one of the Top 100 junior college players in the country by JUCORecruiting.com.
Now, with another championship secured, the Dolphins turn their attention to Hutchinson, where they will compete for a national title on the biggest stage in junior college basketball.
