Bio

Walter Shaw is in his 26th season as head coach and 30th overall with the Brunswick Community College men’s basketball program. At the end of the regular season, Shaw, the winningest active coach in NJCAA Region 10 Division I, has accumulated 524 victories on the Dolphins' sideline. Under his leadership, the BCC Dolphins have captured seven Region 10 Division I Regular Season Championships (2005, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2021, 2022, 2025), five Region 10-D1 Tournament Titles (2005, 2010, 2021, 2025, 2026), and four Atlantic District Championships (2010, 2021, 2025, 2026). His teams have also finished as Region 10-D1 Tournament Runner-Up three times (2008, 2014, 2023). Shaw has been recognized as Region 10-D1 and/or Atlantic District Coach of the Year seven times (2005, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2021, 2025, 2026). The back-to-back Region 10-D1 and Atlantic District Champion Dolphins enter the NJCAA Division I National Tournament for the fourth time in program history, following consecutive 28-win seasons. The 28 victories tie the program record, previously set in 2005 and 2008. The 2005 Region 10-D1 Championship marked the first championship in any sport in Brunswick Community College history, while the 2021 team became the first Dolphins squad to win a championship on their home court.

Player development and advancement have been hallmarks of Shaw’s program. During his tenure, 175 players have advanced to four-year colleges and universities, including 71 to NCAA Division I programs, representing 92 institutions across 20 states. Additionally, 20 former Dolphins have gone on to play professionally around the world.  Shaw has coached 10 NJCAA All-Americans, 56 All-Region selections, and two Region Players of the Year. While success on the court has been consistent, Shaw places equal emphasis on academics, character, and life preparation. His program boasts a 95% matriculation rate for sophomore players transferring to four-year institutions. The Dolphins are also active in the community, participating in roadside cleanups, reading programs, youth basketball clinics, and mentoring initiatives at local schools.  A native of Riegelwood, North Carolina, Shaw began his coaching career at just 19, serving as an assistant under BCC’s founding coach, the late Gene Doane, before becoming head coach at 23. Prior to joining the Dolphins’ staff, Shaw served as a student manager for the 1995–96 UNC Wilmington Seahawks under head coach Jerry Wainwright, a team that finished as Colonial Athletic Association Tournament runner-up. Shaw graduated from East Columbus High School in 1995, where he lettered in basketball, football, tennis, and track. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from UNC Wilmington in 1999 and later completed a Master of Arts in Physical Education/Sports Administration from UNC Pembroke. In addition to coaching, Shaw has served in numerous roles during his tenure at Brunswick Community College. He currently serves as Director of the Health and Fitness Science Program, coordinates the BCC Holiday Basketball Classic, supervises high school tournaments hosted on campus, and remains active in local education, having served on the parent advisory committees at both Supply Elementary School and Shallotte Middle School. Shaw is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association, and the NJCAA Empowerment Council. He has also served as a presenter at the NJCAA Convention and in the NABC/NJCAA Culture in Coaching Series. In 2020, he was selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Top Connect NJCAA Leaders Program.

Shaw and his wife of 23 years, Tamara, reside in Shallotte with their three school-aged children: Kendra, Leah, and Walter Jr. (Monty). In November 2021, Brunswick Community College honored Shaw’s impact on the program and institution by naming the basketball court in his honor.
